Veteran's tree planting is May 1

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Since 2005, the Greencastle Department of Public Works and the City of Greencastle have been honoring veterans through the Veteran's Memorial Tree Project along Veterans Memorial Highway.

Each year, flowering trees are planted to honor any and all American veterans, making it a beautiful tribute to those who have given so much to their country.

In addition to the tree, a permanent memorial marker identifies the veteran and the branch of service. Included is a certificate to be given to the sponsor of the memorial planting which names the veteran, the branch of service, years of service and the location of the memorial tree along Veterans Memorial Highway.

This year's ceremony will take place May 1 at 10 a.m. along Veterans Memorial Highway between South Jackson Street and County Road 50 West-Putnamville Road. The program will feature the reading of each veteran's name and a flag ceremony by the Army National Guard.

Anyone wishing to purchase a Veterans Memorial Tree Package should contact Brad Phillips or Kathy Hawkins of the Greencastle Department of Public Works, 653-3391.

Each tree package costs $75.
