Becky Mason, Holly Watkins, Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray, Olivia Query, Tammy Hunter, Mary Jane Scamahorn, Cari Cox, Peggy Gardner, Gwen Morris and Corina Ziuchkovski all took part in the signing of a proclamation naming next week as the Week of the Young Child.

GREENCASTLE -- Mayor Sue Murray signed a proclamation recently making April 11 through 17 the Week of the Young Child.

Representatives from the Putnam County Library, Head Start, New Pathways Preschool, Putnam County/Owen County Healthy Families and Greencastle Primary Schools, in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, gathered for the signing at city hall.

The purpose of this week, whose theme is "Early Years are Learning Years," is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

The Week of the Young Child serves as a time to reaffirm the community's commitment to ensuring that every child experiences the type of early environment -- at home, at child care, at school and in the community -- that will promote learning.

The proclamation recognizes the organizations that make a difference in the lives of young children.

It also states appreciation for teachers and others who make a difference in the lives of children and recognizes the policies that support early learning.
