SP girls' tennis picks up pair of wins

GREENCASTLE -- The South Putnam girls' tennis team picked up a pair of convincing wins this week over Turkey Run and South Vermillion.

On Tuesday, the Eagles defeated Turkey Run 5-0. No. 1 singles player Megan Klotz defeated Dallas Uplinger 6-3 and 6-1, while No. 2 singles player Ashley Ross won 7-5 and 6-3. In No. 3 singles action, Kendra Latham breezed past Cheyenne Chaplin 6-0 and 6-0.

In double action, Kaitlynn Nissen and Kyley Brown defeated Heather Harbison and Hannah Smith 6-1 and 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Allison Guthrie and Jordyn Pitts defeated Brooke Busenbark and Tiffany Hicks 6-3 and 6-0.

The Eagles traveled to South Vermillion Thursday and once again displayed dominance and won 5-0.

Klotz defeated Andrea John in No. 1 singles 6-2 and 6-2, while Ross won the No. 2 singles match against Kayla Battaglia 6-1 and 6-3. Latham captured the No. 3 singles event 6-2 and 6-4.

Brown and Nissen defeated Jessica Gohman and Ashley Farrington 6-2 and 7-5, while Guthrie and Pitts downed Emily Walters and Jessie Lubovich.

"(These were) two big wins for us," head coach Johnnie Briones said. "(We'll) need them going into next week vs Speedway, who is having a good year."

South Putnam will travel to Speedway Monday at 4:30 p.m.
