GREENCASTLE -- Putnam County Hospital is now an official site for the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program. SilverSneakers provides physical activity, health education and social interaction for senior adults.

Physical activity has shown a positive impact on the lives of older individuals. Putnam County Hospital is helping adults get the exercise they need to maintain healthier lifestyles through this program that was created specifically for senior adults.

The class offers something for everyone, regardless of fitness level, and can help improve overall strength and range of motion while maintaining health and independence. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance and a chair for seated or standing support are used during the class.

The class is in collaboration with the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness department at PCH. The Cardiac Rehab department provides secondary prevention programs following a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, as well as various diagnostic and monitoring services.

Putnam County Hospital will offer the SilverSneakers Muscular Strength and Range of Movement group fitness classes to any adult 55 years and older on the third floor every Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m. Classes last one hour.

Class participation is covered with eligible insurance carriers for those 65 and older. For those not eligible, a $5 participation fee will be collected at each class. For more information or to find out if you are eligible, contact the Cardiac Rehabilitation department at 655-2580.
