ROACHDALE -- SummerFest is coming to Roachdale, home of the famous Roach Race. Festivities will kick off Friday with a fish fry at the VFW and "DJ Doctor" providing entertainment.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, the festival begins with a full schedule of events.

Pet owners can visit the small animal clinic provided by New Winchester Animal Clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the firehouse. Canine and feline vaccinations, heartworm testing and placement of microchip IDs will be available.

Rabies shots will be $13 and canine shots offered include puppy shots for $10, DHLPP (5-way) for $12, Bordetella for $20 and DHLPP/RV/BORD for $45. Feline shots include FVRCP (3-way) for $12, FVRCP/LEUK for $25 and FVRCP/LEUK/RV for $15.

For more information about the New Winchester clinic, call 317-539-6612.

All pet-friendly people are invited to attend the pet parade. The cutest, best pet, owner team, best costume and best of show categories will be judged. Anyone with questions about the pet parade can call Nancy at 522-1244.

Parents, grandparents or anyone with children riding in their vehicles can have a free car seat check provided by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. The department has trained safety seat technicians on hand to ensure children in Putnam County are riding safely inside any vehicle. To make an appointment for a safety check, call Deputy Dave Allison's voicemail at 653-3211.

There will also be a corn hole tournament with the winning team taking home all the registration fees collected. To register a team, call Nikki Riggle at 522-5035.

A parade, to be led by the 2009 Roach Race winner Ryan Muse, will be held at 5 p.m. Line up for the parade will begin at Roachdale Elementary and progress north on Indiana Street, crossing SR 236 to Washington Street, turning east and continuing to Main Street, where it will turn south and across 236 to Grove Street, turning west and ending on Indiana Street.

Live entertainment provided by Van Terry with an acoustic old-time folk presentation, magician and illusionist Devon Stewart and country music singer Pam Bryan will be from 6 to 9 p.m. A "teen dance" will also be at 6 p.m. in the firehouse with Sound Investments. Entry is free, but there will be a charge for snacks and drinks.

In addition to these activities, there will be a farmer's market, a children's pedal tractor pull, a visit from "Mr. Pick-A-Pocket," a variety of activities for children and adults, as well as the famous Roach Race and a wide selection of food.

Vendors interested in renting spaces can still do so by the non-food area at a festival introductory rate of $10 for a 10x10 space for three or more spaces. With a 25 percent reduction in price for booth space, vendors are asked to call Bonnie at 522-1430 or Dianna at 435-2813 for an application. The food vendor area has already been filled.

The festival was made possible through collaboration with Friends of the Park, Roachdale PRIDE and the VFW. The trio decided to revive the once famous Roachdale SummerFest downtown.

After June 23, a complete schedule of events will be posted on the Roachdale library's Web site at www.roachdale.lib.in.us.
