James V. Samsel
James V. Samsel, 89, of Cloverdale passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 at Hendricks Regional Health.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Royal Center, the son of the late Homer and Merle (Stevens) Samsel.
He was married to Marcella M. (Pryor) Samsel on Aug. 4, 1952 and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Patricia A. Johnson and husband Robert, Rosedale, Michael L. Samsel and wife Barbara J., Lebanon, James E. Samsel and wife Rebecca, Greencastle and Eddie Samsel and wife Cathy, Cloverdale; sisters Juanita Frick, Logansport and Margaret A. Wilson, Calif.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles H. Samsel; a granddaughter, Kelly Ann Green; sisters Mary Wilson and Lois Fickle and brothers William and Clifford L. Samsel.
He was a member of the Putnamville United Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday School superintendent, and the Hurst-Collins Post No. 281 of the American Legion, Cloverdale. He was a farmer, retired rural mail carrier for the Cloverdale Post Office for 20 years, school bus driver for 25 years, 4-H Leader for 20 years and had worked with Putnam County ASCS.
He served in the U. S. Army during WW II in Company A of the 59th Signal Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded five Bronze Stars.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. the Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Cloverdale Cemetery.
