Monday, September 27, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- The DePauw University Band will present its first concert of the 2010-11 season Sunday.

The program will feature a wide range of styles and musical eras. The performance begins at 3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium of the Green Center for the Performing Arts. It can also be heard live on DePauw's student radio station, WGRE 91.5 FM or online at http://www.depauw.edu/univ/wgre/listen.asp

Selections to be performed include the overture to Gioacchino Rossini's opera, "An Italian in Algiers;" "Blue Shades" by Louisiana-born Frank Ticheli; and John Phillip Sousa's classic march, "The Liberty Bell." Other works include "October" by Eric Whitacre, "Batuque" by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, and Samuel Barber's "Commando March."

The Ticheli work, flavored with New Orleans jazz and blues, will feature senior Katherine Blakey, principal clarinetist in the University Band.

It is requested that, if possible, those attending the concert bring one non-perishable food item for admission. All donations will go to the Putnam County Food Bank.

Items in great need are canned fruits and vegetables, boxed dry rice, and juice boxes containing 100 percent Vitamin C.
