Event brings Legos to library

GREENCASTLE -- Fans of building with small plastic blocks should be aware of a new event at the Putnam County Public Library this Wednesday.

Brick Mania will allow fans of the tiny construction materials to meet other like-minded creators.

The event will be at the Kiwanis room in the library from 4 to 6 p.m. There is a small charge associated with attending -- a donation of a handful of blocks.

Cortina Ziuchkovski, the children's librarian at the library, said the required handful of blocks is there to build a stockpile of the small colored bricks.

"We'd really like to start a monthly block party but we don't have any blocks," Ziuchkovski said. "So we need donations from around the community."

Ziuchkovski said the library has been careful to avoid the term Lego, because the term is a trademark of the Lego Group.

Ziuchkovski also asked that anyone who had any bricks that aren't being used to donate them to the library.

Ziuchkovski said she hopes to use this event as a basis for starting the monthly block party. By both collecting blocks and taking an informal poll of what days and times work for people, the library can move forward in a more expedited fashion.

Ziuchkovski said the event should be an afternoon of fun for kids in the 12-and-under age group. She also said the library has a collection of instruction booklets for anyone who needs inspiration.

Ziuchkovski also said kids tended to draw inspiration from each other.
