Ben-Hur Gavel for Bainbridge

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Bainbridge Improvement Society (BIS) volunteer Linda Hartman discovered a rare "Ben-Hur Beech" gavel while going through a box of donations to the BIS community garage sale. The rare artifact was carved from the wood of the beech tree under which General Lew Wallace wrote much of "Ben-Hur." BIS will donate the gavel to the General Lew Wallace Study and Museum in Crawfordsville. Pictured at the sale are BIS volunteers Maxine Roush, John Kessinger, Hartman, Margaret Kessinger and Thursa Evens.
