City officials inspect collapse at Mason's
GREENCASTLE -- Greencastle city officials have secured the location at Mason Jewelers, 18 W. Washington St., following the collapse of the second floor onto the first floor.
Owner Steve Mason entered his building around midday Friday to find the collapse. When the Greencastle Fire Department responded to the call, firefighters also found the building's east wall bulging about one foot.
"Our major goal now is to secure it so no one in the public gets injured," Fire Chief Bill Newgent said.
No one was in the building at the time of the collapse, and the business was not open.
Power to the building has been secured, and the building does not have natural gas.
The next step was to determine how much damage has been done and what further steps should be taken. Greencastle building inspector Dave Varvel was on the scene to investigate the matter. Mason's insurance company has also been contacted.
"Right now, they're just trying to see what the extent of the damage is and determine our next course of action," Newgent said.
