Woman arrested for theft at funeral
ROACHDALE -- A New Market woman spent most of the weekend in jail after being accused of stealing from a funeral attendee.
Heather Stewart Lane, 32, was arrested while attending a funeral at Roachdale Christian Church on Saturday. She has been charged with Class D felony theft.
"It appears she attempted to steal cash and ID from another woman at the funeral," said Roachdale Police Department Lt. Michael Parks.
The woman Lane allegedly attempted to steal from was the wife of a Hendricks County Sheriff's Department Deputy, Parks said.
"(Lane) attempted to take the cash and ID from the victim's purse," Parks said. "The victim's husband said he saw the whole thing take place. Then the victim followed (Lane) into another part of the funeral home, and said she saw (Lane) going through the pockets of coats."
Parks said the Hendricks County police officer detained Lane until police could get to the church and talk to Lane.
"She did speak to us, but she denied the whole thing," Parks said.
Parks said when he ran a criminal background check on Lane, no history came back.
Lane was transported to the Putnam County jail and booked in. She remained in jail Monday night. Her bond had been set at $10,000 cash or $7,500 surety.
A representative from the Putnam County Jail said Lane would likely be arraigned sometime today.
