First First Friday to be the first of many activities for Arts Council

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Tomorrow will see the initial entry in the Greencastle Arts Council's First Friday Events, which will highlight a broad spectrum of arts in the community.

Constance Ferry with Hobbit Gardens described the event as a chance to expose people to a number of local artists.

"We're partnering with different venues downtown to have an event where, from 5 to 8 p.m., people walk from venue to venue, experience different art and artists, learn who the artists are in their community and how to support them," Ferry said. "It's a way for the community and the artist to come together."

Ferry said one of the spotlights on this First Friday will be on local poetry.

"The library is partnering with the Blue Door for a poetry open mic night," said Ferry.

The open mic night at the Blue Door will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with musicians also welcome to take the stage.

In addition to the open mic, the GC Galleria will have a silent auction from 5 to 7 p.m., auctioning chairs for the SAWS Charity, The Fluttering Duck will have a local artist exhibit and live music by the Fret Set and Mama Nunz Family Restaurant will have live music throughout the night and a free wine tasting starting at 7 p.m., as well as paintings by Kathy Kirkpatrick.

"This is a way for artists to be supported by their community. Any and all artists are welcome," Ferry said. "Come to a First Friday event and speak with a member of the Greencastle Arts Council and learn what they can do to be a part of the council and to showcase their art."

Ferry said when the weather is mild, artists will be able to set up and showcase their art during the events. She encouraged people to go through the arts council, which she said would result in more attention.

"There will be specific artists that will be showcased through our advertising and at each Friday event," she said. "I think they'll get more out of it if they work with the council and are featured at a specific venue."

With all the arts council has planned, Ferry wants to emphasize that the art council aims to do more than just these First Friday events.

"The Greencastle Arts Council wants to do more than just First Friday; our goal is to make Greencastle an arts destination for the area and for people of Indiana," she said.

Ferr said the arts council encompasses all the different arts, including healing arts.

  • This sounds like it could be a fantastic opportunity for the community. We take a walk around town on Fridays when the weather is nice and see many other families doing the same. Having live music to highlight our trek and introduce our girls to a variety of musical styles and sounds and the people who enjoy them. Many thanks to the Arts Council and the participating businesses.
