After 180 years, Somerset Christian Church has undergone a name change. A passersby in recent days may have noticed the banner and new sign identifying the church as Lifespring Church.

"Our church has transformed itself quite a bit," Pastor Scott Volland said. "There are so many things going on at the church."

The church's name comes from John 4:14, which says, "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Volland, who has been pastor at the church for 6 1/2 years, said he wants the new name to reflect the congregation as a contemporary-style, nondenominational church. He said the church's base is now young adults and families.

"With a 180-year history, we certainly do not disregard the foundations of the church, but we feel it's time for a new image in the community," Volland said.

"We're positioning ourselves in the community as Lifespring Church, where there's no denomination, but anybody can come and be ministered to where they are."

Lifespring Church, located at 5038 North U.S. 231 (intersection of U.S. 231 and CR 500N), can be reached at 653-7455. Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m., while Wednesday evening services are at 6:45 p.m.

  • I can't believe they changed the name....where were the elders of this church that allowed this. I was born and raised in that area and Somerset Christian Church has been the name forever. People use it as a landmark for directions. When someone says "turn at somerset" or "you know that little white church on the highway"...everyone knows where that is. Lifespring sounds like one of those new starter churches...this is not a starter church. If they wanted to be non-denominational then take out christian but leave it somerset church....very disappointed.

  • I'm sure that the elders were right there in the meeting and agreeing that it is a good idea...otherwise it couldn't have happened.

I'm glad to hear that the church is willing to change and try to be relevant with the truth instead of being satisfied with being a landmark on the highway. God bless them for it.
