Eagles take down Rockville, Lighthouse Christian

The South Putnam boys' track team racked up nine wins en route to its win in a tri-meet Monday. The Eagles won with a total of 81.5, with Rockville finishing second with 49 and Lighthouse Christian third with 29.5.

Freshman Tyler Nield won a hotly contested race in the 3,200-meter run. Nield ran out to a big lead, before a Lighthouse Christian runner closed the gap until he was virtually stride for stride with the Eagles runner. But when Nield was giving the signal for the final lap, the freshman kicked out to a big lead before winning the race with a time of 12:13.4.

"I really was impressed with Tyler Nield in the 3,200. He ran his best race ever. He's improved all year and tonight he really hit stride and really ran well. I was really, really proud of him," head coach Carl Coons said.

Hunter Barr was able to capture the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:04.37, while Ryan Zigler ran away with the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.59. Wes Rinser won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.53.

Ryan Chestnut captured the shot put with a toss of 45-7.5 and Jesse Gardner won the pole vault with a height of seven-feet. Rudy Harris was tops in the long jump with a leap of 17-7.

The 3,200-meter relay team won with a time of 12:24.14 and the 400-meter relay team won with a time of 49.59.

"Overall I thought the kids did what they had to do," Coons said. "They tried to overcome the elements and do as well as they could. I feel very positive about it. I really do. On a night like tonight, you're not going to have outstanding performances, you just got to get through it and we got through it."
