Eagles girls track dominates Rox, Lighthouse Christian

The South Putnam girls' track team braved the elements Monday to cruise to a big win over visiting Rockville and Lighthouse Christian. The Eagles won with a total of 91, followed by Rockville with 38 and Lighthouse Christian with 31.

Kelsey Searles and Mallory Glaze led the way for the Eagles with two wins each. Searles won the discus with a distance of 77-3 and the shot put with a toss of 28-9.5. Glaze captured the 1,600-meter run in a time of 6:23.76, a full 25 seconds quicker than second place. She also won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 14:24.45.

Melodie Williams won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 1:06.24, while Aisa Terry took the top spot in the pole vault with a height of 5-6. Aubrey Nichols won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:53.81.

South Putnam won the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 12:24.14, the 400-meter relay in a time of 57.27 and the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 5:06.53.

Monday's weather was anything but ideal for track athletes. A steady rain beat down on the competitors, but head coach Kate Atkinson noted it's the type of conditions her teams have experienced in the big meets before. Asked if the weather has hampered her team, Atkinson said she thinks it might be a good thing in disguise.

"It does a little bit because obviously you want the optimal weather," she said. "At the same time thinking back since I've been here county, and especially conference, it's never usually very good weather. We talked about that tonight (Monday) and let them know 'hey, you might have nights like this and you still have to go out and perform. It's not an excuse, so hopefully this prepared us more than hurt us tonight."
