Greencastle Arbor Day program slated Saturday

Friday, May 6, 2011

A special Greencastle Veterans Memorial Highway Arbor Day celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

The program will honor the many sacrifices by the veterans who have served and continue to serve our nation, as well as recognizing the City of Greencastle's 12th year of being named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The city is also being recognized with a Growth Award for the second straight year honoring environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.

The event will be staged in the western section of Veterans Highway with the road blocked off for the ceremony between South Jackson and Putnamville streets.

The morning's activities will feature guest speakers, including retired Brig. Gen. Ray Phillips and Indiana Community and Urban Forestry coordinator Pam Loucks.

The ceremony also will include the dedication of 30 trees that have been donated this year in honor of the lives of local veterans.

Persons considering the donation of a veteran's tree for next year are asked to contact the Greencastle Department of Public Works or the Putnam County Foundation.
