Richard D. Burks, 82, Franklin, formerly of Greencastle, passed away at Franklin United Methodist Community on Friday, May 6, 2011.

He was born on June 10, 1928 in Spencer to Denver and Mabel (Blair) Burks. He was a 1945 graduate of Spencer High School and then attended the IU School of Music for two years.

Richard was a broker for heavy rigging and hauling. Mr. Burks was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War, and was a lifetime member of the Greencastle American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed golf, sports, Indy car racing and was a dog lover.

During the '50s he played in The Big Four and in the '60s with the Al Cobin Band. He was an accomplished jazz drummer, playing at many venues in Indiana and Illinois.

Richard is survived by his children, Jo Ellen (Michael) Dyer of Palm City, Fla., Sally Burks Hardy of Spencer, Jack Burks of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Rick (Stephanie) Burks of Greenwood; grandchildren, Derek Dyer, Meredith Dyer, William Hardy, Kelsey Burks, Shelby Burks and Isabelle Burks; and cousins John and Jerry Blair.

Memorial services will be held at noon Thursday at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Pastor David Lee will officiate. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greencastle VFW or Owen County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
