CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale's softball team finished the regular season with a flourish, extending their winning streak to five straight by defeating Rockville, 6-3, in a nonconference game Friday on the Clovers' field.

"It's a good way to finish the season and go into the sectional Monday," Cloverdale coach Kim Bailey said.

The Clovers (13-10) play Monrovia at 7 p.m. Monday in the sectional at Tri-West. They split their two-game series in the West Central Conference this season.

Cloverdale starting pitcher Paige Gutierrez worked out of a jam in the third inning and held the Rox (14-10) to one hit and didn't allow a walk in the last four-and-a-third innings. She struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in those innings. The right-hander's complete game totals were five hits, 11 strikeouts, one walk and three hit batters.

"From the get go, Paige didn't have her pop," Bailey said. "Then, she came into the zone."

Cloverdale took a 5-0 lead with four runs in the first inning and one in the second.

Gutierrez hit Lindsey Greene with a pitch and walked Brook Earl to open the third inning. Greene stole third and scored on an error. Hillary Woodard singled to right and Kayla Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out.

Gutierrez retired Kelsey Sandusky on a fly to center fielder Lindsay Robson, but Brittany Gordon drove in two runs on a single to left.

Gutierrez struck out the next hitter on a change-up and when Wilson tried a delayed steal, Gutierrez alertly took catcher Heather Goss' throw, wheeled and fired to third baseman Brianna Hoff, who tagged out the sliding Wilson.

Rockville didn't get another hit until one out in the seventh, a single by Woodard, and Gutierrez struck out the final two hitters.

The Clovers had seven hits, including a pair of doubles by Kat Raisor and a single and double from Adrianna Patterson.

Gutierrez delivered the big blow in the first, a single that drove in Sam Smith and Hoff. Smith had walked and Hoff reached on an error.

Gutierrez had gone to third on an two-base outfield error. Kara Knapp walked and Gutierrez scored on a double steal. Patterson drove in the fourth run with a ground ball out.

Knapp's double to deep right-center field drove in Hoff, who had walked, in the second.

Ahead 5-3, the Clovers added their final run in the fifth on Patterson's double to right and Raisor's long RBI double to left-center.
