Friday, July 1, 2011

District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) honored the members of the American Legion Post 58 of Greencastle by presenting them with an Indiana state flag on Monday.

The presentation coincided with the American Legion's observance of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day, a day to recognize the long-term effects of combat stress upon soldiers.

Rep. Baird presented a flag to Greencastle American Legion Post 58 by holding a small presentation commemorating the legion's work and ending with a ceremonial raising of the Indiana flag.

Keith Whitinger, who serves as Commander of Post 58, accepted the flag on behalf of Post 58.

"The American Legion of Greencastle members have not only shown their devotion to our state and our country through their service, but they have invested in their community," Rep. Baird said. "It was a privilege to give back to an organization that recognizes some of Indiana's many veterans."

Incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization, the American Legion is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization. The organization member's mentor youth programs in the community, advocate patriotism, promote strong national security and continue devotion to service members and veterans.

The American Legion Post 58 was established in 1946 and currently has approximately 340 legion members with a total membership around 750.

Post 58 is engaged in the community by providing college scholarships, holding fundraisers for local charities and raising money for community members and community veterans. The legion also aids families of veterans by escorting service men and women coming home from service.

"I am grateful to recognize the American Legion Post 58 for their continued involvement in the community of Greencastle and the State of Indiana," Rep. Baird praised.
