Cloverdale opens with four-set win

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale volleyball team opened its season with a marathon match against Danville Tuesday. The Clovers won in four sets, winning 25-21, 28-26, 25-27 and 25-23.

Leading scorers for Cloverdale were Mariah Oetken, Bradanne Toney and Katie Fulkerson with 10 points each, with Bristy Skiles and Taylor Jones adding nine each. Rebekah Jordan had three points, with Paige Gruener adding two points and Katie Kays adding one.

Leading the Clovers in kills was Toney with 18 kills, while Oetken recorded eight. Jones and Adri Patterson had six, Gruener four and Fulkerson had three. Toney also had four blocks and Oetken had two.

Skiles logged 27 set assists, with Toney scoring 14 digs and Lindsay Robson had 11. Gruener and Oetken had nine digs each, with Jordan and Katie Kays recording three each.

"This was a great win for us tonight" head coach Kathy Moore said. "Both teams really battled, chased the balls and had great saves. The scores were so close each game, we were happy to get the win. We go to Cascade Thursday night for a conference match and it will be tough. Cascade is the reining conference champ and have serveral returning players."
