Clean Water Indiana funds projects in Putnam, Owen counties

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

The boards of supervisors for the Putnam County and Owen County Soil and Water Conservation Districts have announced their partnership in bringing a Sediment/Nutrient Reduction Cost Share Program the two counties.

It is made possible by grants received by the Owen and Putnam County SWCDs through the Clean Water Indiana Grant Fund administered by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

Applications for this program will be accepted until Oct. 15. If funding allows applications after the deadline, they will be taken in order received.

The program in Putnam County will allow up to $1,000 per entity for the purchase of cover crop seed. The program will encompass all of Owen County for conservation practices that address sediment and/or nutrient reduction.

An application can be obtained from either the Putnam or Owen county SWCD offices. Those accepted into the Cost Share Program must follow the standards provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) who is also a partner in this Program and will provide technical assistance.

This Cost Share Program for cover crops is part of an ongoing Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative to provide education, technical assistance, and cost share opportunities to the farming community within Putnam and Owen counties.
