Tiger Cubs edged by Warriors

DANVILLE -- The Danville Warriors' Zach Blankenship scored early in the opening half when he headed in a shot off a corner kick with 10 minutes played and the Tiger Cubs were playing catch-up for the rest of the game. Greencastle lost to Danville 4-3 Monday, despite a two goal performance from Sonney Basham.

GHS head coach Dave Lilly said the team had its opportuniies and finally tied the score with 17 minutes remaining in the half when senior Jon Good hit a shot past Danville's keeper Ryder Pickens. Danville regained the lead with 9:10 to play in the period when Blankenship finished on a crossing ball to beat freshman keeper Alex Briones.

The Tiger Cubs answered quickly in the second half with Sonney Basham scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the period to give the Tiger Cubs the lead. Both goals were assisted by Evan Smith.

Greencastle had the better chances the remaining time, but one again Blankenship was able to head in a goal on a Danville corner kick to retake the lead with seven minutes to play. GHS had several chances to tie the score, the last coming on a break away by senior Mitchell Ball with only seconds remaining in the match. Pickens was able to make the save just before time expired.

Danville improved to 3-0 on the season and the loss drops Greencastle to 4-2. The Tiger Cubs will travel to Owen Valley on Monday to take on the Patriots.
