James F. Cox, 78, Greencastle, passed away on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born Aug. 9, 1933 in Putnam County, he was the son of Jesse C. and Elsie Myrtle (Huff) Cox and a 1952 graduate of Greencastle High School. He married Marjorie E. (Petry) Cox and she preceded him in death.

James had served in the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kan., in Europe and in Germany from 1954 to 1956. After his discharge in 1962, he worked for over 30 years as a machinist at the IBM plant in Greencastle, retiring in 1988. After his retirement he worked for the Putnam County Hospital for 10 years. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Mike Cox of Greencastle, Curt Cox of Kentucky, Cindy (Charles) Nice of Indianapolis and Debbie (Steve) Cope of Crawfordsville; a brother, Marvin (Jeanette) Cox of Pa.; a sister, Martha (Bill) Bell of Brazil; eight grandchildren, Anthony Cox, Charlie Nice, Kari Cox, Jamie Skeen, Curtis Cope, Jane Nice, Emmett Cox and Elizabeth Cox; and one great-grandson, Deven Cox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, Robert Cox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Knapp officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at the Boone-Hutcheson Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2.
