Tiger Cubs outscore Cougars 11-0 to get win in boys soccer

Greencastle's Sonney Basham scored three goals against the Cougars Thursday.

ROACHDALE -- The Greencastle and North Putnam boys' soccer team faced off Thursday with a steady, cool drizzle greeting both squads. The Tiger Cubs were able to overpower the Cougars and left the pitch with a convincing 11-0 win.

"I told them despite the score, I think they were a better side than Southmont. Southmont got one against us and we scored one against ourselves and it made it appear that it wasn't a total blowout. They played with us for the first 20 minutes or so, while they were fresh," GHS head coach Dave Lilly said.

It took the Tiger Cubs 23 minutes before their first score and from there GHS never looked back. Jon Good scored the Tiger Cubs' first goal of the evening with 27:50 on the clock.

Greencastle added four more scores in the first half, with Brandon Query, Evan Smith, Tanner Dean and Sonney Basham accounting for the goals.

North Putnam was outscored 5-0 in the first half, but they were able to stay with the Tiger Cubs. However, the start of the second half put the proverbial nail in the coffin for the Cougars.

Smith scored the first goal of the second half with 37:30 on the clock. He was followed with goals by Good, Mitchell Ball, Query and Basham, putting the Tiger Cubs in front 10-0. Greencastle scored all five of its goals in a four minute span.

North Putnam head coach Dave Moeller said once GHS scored its first second half goal, he didn't like what he saw.

"I think once they scored that first one, we just gave up," Moeller said.

Basham added his third and the Tiger Cubs' final goal of the evening with 17:03 remaining in the contest. Despite giving up 11 goals on the night, North Putnam keeper Jon Goode recorded some tough saves for his squad.

"He had some good saves and then he made some freshman mistakes. This being his first year of varsity soccer, he does make the occasional mistakes," Moeller said.

Moeller went on to say the team needs to focus on some key things if they expect to get better.

"Our effort -- making sure we're focused for 40 minutes," he said on things the team needs to work on. "Defensively, we need to work on that we're marked up. The first half we had a lot of goals off the weak side. We just weren't picking up marks.

"Our biggest problem this year is defending ball out of the air. We've given up, I don't know how many goal this game. I know last game we gave up five goals out of the air, so that's out biggest weakness right now," Moeller said.

Lilly was pleased he was able to get multiple players goals on the night, especially in the beginning of the second half.

"We had clearly some guys who were superior to them, but I thought they held their own," Lilly said. "I kind of felt bad at 11-0 and we tried not to run it up. I tried to get different guys goals and we did. We had a lot of different guys score tonight, which is always good.

We didn't do a whole lot different," he said of the second half. "We moved a couple guys around, but it was for the most part the same guys. Our guys just wanted it more on a couple plays where there were loose balls."
