All that's fit to print

Tuesday, October 11, 2011
On Monday afternoon, the Banner Graphic installed a new printing system for the newspaper. Each piece was too large to carry up the stairs and had to be lifted with a crane in three separate pieces. The original machine, which was purchased in 2000, printed pages onto film negatives, which were then transferred to metal plates, and then to paper. The new computer-to-plate unit sends the page straight to the metal plate from the digital copies, improving newspaper quality and visual clarity. Newspaper general manager Daryl Taylor stands in the doorway to guide the large piece of equipment into the printing room as it is lifted into the air by crane operator Richard Lyon.
