ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam Middle School football teams closed their season with thrilling overtime wins over South Putnam. The seventh grade team won 18-12, while the eighth grade team won 12-6.

For the seventh graders, E.J. Westgate scored two touchdowns for the Cougars and Jack Kendall provided a key interception to stop a Southmont drive. In overtime, Kendall scored the game-winning touchdown for North Putnam.

The eighth grade squad got out quickly when Brad Hodges scored on a 35-yard run. The game would not see anymore scoring until the late third quarter when Southmont went on a seven-minute march down the field to knot the game up.

In overtime, North Putnam got the ball first and wasted little time regaining the lead. Hodges hit Jimmy Rutter for the score, but the extra point failed.

When it came the Mounties turn to go for the endzone, North Putnam stopped Southmont runners on four straight possessions, with Rutter, Dylan Maggard, Josiah Smith and Levi Purdue leading the defensive stand.

The seventh grade team ended the season with a record of 6-3, while the eighth graders were 4-5.
