Thursday, January 5, 2012

The Purdue Club of Putnam County is again offering three scholarships for Putnam County students who will be attending Purdue University in the fall of 2012.

Additionally, the Barbara and Edward Brookshire Scholarship for a Putnam County student who will major in an agriculture-related field at Purdue, will be administered by the Purdue Club.

Information and application are available in the guidance offices at each of the four high schools. Applications are also available at the Putnam County Community Foundation office, 2 S. Jackson St., Greencastle.

Putnam students who are presently attending Purdue are also eligible to apply.

Completed applications should be submitted to the Community Foundation office by Jan. 13. The chosen recipients will be notified by May 1.

This is the 11th year the club has offered scholarships. The 2011 recipients were Emily Dean, a 2010 graduate of Greencastle High School, now a sophomore at Purdue studying agriculture economics; Cody Long, a 2011 graduate of South Putnam High School, who will study pharmacy at Purdue; and Garrett Porter, a 2011 graduate of North Putnam High School, who will study agricultural economics.

The 2011 Barbara and Edward Brookshire Scholarship was shared by Kyle Alcorn, a 2009 graduate of North Putnam, now a junior at Purdue studying agriculture economics; Katherine Farris, a 2011 graduate of Greencastle, who will be in the School of Science at Purdue; and Janna Oxford, a 2009 graduate of Cloverdale High School, now a sophomore at Purdue studying agriculture education. Oxford spent the 2010-11 school year serving the FFA as its state treasurer.

"Since our club was organized in 1998, our most important activity has been our scholarship program," Purdue Club President Ron Birt said.

"We have now aided 26 Putnam County students with their Purdue studies and awarded over $13,000. All proceeds from our fundraising activities go into the club's endowed fund at the Putnam County Community Foundation to ensure funds for future scholarships."

More information may be obtained from Birt at 526-2466, scholarship chairman Shirley Steward at 386-7590, the PCCF office at 653-4978 or the county high school guidance offices.
