Eagle boys upend defending sectional champs

Friday, January 6, 2012

South Putnam's boys' and girls' swim squads hosted Southmont Thursday night as a precursor to the WCC swim meet this Saturday.

The boys' squad, against the defending sectional champion Mounties, eked out a 91-89 win, with the girls falling 109-71.

In a meet where no finish was inconsequential, the Eagle boys needed every place they earned to knock off the Mounties after netting four first place finishes.

Ben Albright captured the 200 free, Tayler Arnold took the 100 back, Sam Gould won the diving and the team of Albright, Gould, John McCammack and Zane Crosby won the 400 free relay.

South Putnam's girls had four winners on the evening with Joslyn Farmer winning the 50 free, Morgan Deszi taking the 500 free, Makenzie Trisler winning the 100 fly and Courtney Sullivan placing first in the diving competition.

Eagle head coach Matthew Edwards said afterwards that the time off between the Eagles' last meet was helpful in getting swimmers fine-tuned.

"It was a god result. We knew we were up against a good team in Southmont. Their boys won the sectional last year and, being near Crawfordsville, they have a lot of good swimmers through the Sugar Creek Swim Club," Edwards said.

"We'd been preparing for this meet for a while. Our last meet was with Fountain Central on Dec. 10, so it's been nearly a month. We've been using that time to work on all dimensions of the sport, such as starts, turns and technique.

"We've been hitting a lot of yards lately. Everything we worked on in practice came off. This has been by far our best meet, in my opinion," Edwards added.

Edwards said there were many notable swims, but every swim counted.

"Makenzie Trisler, who had been out for a couple of days due to illness, came in and won the fly tonight against her own expectations. Tayler Arnold had a personal best in the backstroke tonight and took first place," Edwards said.

"Morgan Deszi really shined in the 500. She won by a long stretch. Ben Albright had four personal bests and two wins. For a freshman, that's exceptional.

"Our divers nailed down two firsts, a second and third tonight. I told our guys if they didn't get first, second and third, we wouldn't win the meet. We won by two points," Edwards added.

"There were a lot of second and third place finishes. Everybody came together for this meet."

With the WCC Meet at DePauw University, Edwards said the result of Thursday's meet would be a catalyst for Saturday.

"We're looking forward to the WCC meet. We're planning on using pretty much the same line-up for Saturday, so we're glad to see that this worked well tonight," Edwards said.

"We were preparing for tonight's meet, but we were using this meet to prepare for conference. I think this meet was really good for morale and help their confidence going into Saturday," he added.

"We're curious to see where we stand within the county and within the conference. With the coaching changes from last year, it's a different conference and a different county.

"We've been working very hard and we're expecting it to pay off."
