Memorial Day ceremonies to include flag dedication Monday morning

Saturday, May 26, 2012

In addition to the various Memorial Day services taking place locally on Monday, a new flagpole will be dedicated next to Greencastle's Veterans Memorial Highway.

Jack and Shirley Dalton have been working with Greencastle VFW Post 1550 and the City of Greencastle to erect a new 40-foot pole at the southwest corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and U.S. 231 (Bloomington Street).

Jack Dalton said talks and planning for the flagpole began in 2000, and it has taken this long to make it a reality.

The VFW will conduct the ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, including the raising of the 8-foot by 12-foot flag.

The city erected the pole and the VFW will furnish the lighting for the flag. The Daltons will supply the flag and future replacement flags.

For the VFW, the ceremony will follow on the heels of its joint memorial ceremony with Greencastle American Legion Post 58 at Forest Hill Cemetery. The annual event will take place at 10 a.m.

Roachdale VFW Post 3284 will also conduct a series of memorial ceremonies at the following locations and times:

* Blakesburg, 8:15 a.m.

* Bainbridge, 8:45 a.m.

* Clear Creek 9:10 a.m.
