Early Harvest

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

The DePauw University Civic Fellows recently organized a donation to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry that should significantly impact the community's fight against hunger. At the end of each year, many DePauw students find a surplus of funds on their meal cards. The funds are not transferable or refundable, so it is a case of use it or lose it. Rather than exhausting their cards on dozens of Little Debbies, bottles of Coke and bags of Doritos, many of the students put the money toward a food drive that purchased more than 4,000 pounds of food for the pantry. Executive Director Judy Miller (center) and volunteers Don Mundy (left) and John Jackman happily received the donation. "This will go a long way to help us keep feeding the hungry," Miller said. She reported the organization has already served 13,000 hungry people in 2012.
