South Putnam, Greencastle battle in final regular season match

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

In their final match before sectionals, Greencastle faced South Putnam over 18 holes at Oak Ridge Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.

The Tiger Cubs concluded the regular season undefeated after knocking off the Eagle 306-367.

Luke Brotherton took medalist honors for the Tiger Cubs with a two-over 74, followed by Alec Davis' 75, Brad Haussin's 76 and Tanner Dean's 81. Raymond Stinson shot 83, with Carl Basile carding a 92.

South Putnam was paced by Derek Chestnut's round of 78, followed by an 83 from Alex Eickhoff, a 99 from Justin Berry, a pair of 107's by Sam Gould and Marcus Skinner and a 115 by Austin Query.

Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin commented that the squad had a phenomenal season.

"I believe that this is the first GHS golf team to finish the regular season without a loss at 15-0. The team also won two invitationals and finished second in another one," Paquin noted.

"They were county and conference champions in the 2012 season. This was an outstanding season and should carry the team into the sectional at Martinsville on June 4 with lots of confidence to advance in the tournament."

South Putnam head coach Brian McClure was impressed with both the visitors and members of his own squad.

"Congratulations to Greencastle on an impressive undefeated season. They have a great team and they showed it again today," McClure said.

"Derek played as well as I've seen him play all season. He had a three hole stretch where he went eagle-birdie-birdie. Hopefully he, and the rest of the guys on the squad, can carry that momentum into sectionals next week."
