Thursday, August 30, 2012

Putnam County residents eager to find a safe disposal solution for their unwanted stockpile of old electronic devices will have two convenient drop sites.

DePauw University, West Central Solid Waste District, Dixie Chopper and Crown Equipment have teamed up with Lafayette's Oscar Winski Co. eRecycling, to sponsor community electronics recycling drives on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

The drives will be conducted at DePauw University's Service Center, 300 West Hill St., and the Greencastle Wal-Mart store, 1750 Indianapolis Rd.

Virtually all household electronics that plug into the wall or run on batteries will be accepted free of charge. Exceptions include TVs and monitors which will be accepted for recycling with a $5 fee.

Light bulbs, water softeners, appliances, refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers will not be accepted at the Sept. 8 drive.

"Crown Equipment has a long-standing tradition of community-minded sustainability initiatives," said Jim Ward, safety/environmental engineer at Crown Equipment. "This recycling drive will help reduce the amount of toxic materials entering into our landfills and make these materials available to produce future products."

Oscar Winski eRecycling is the first Indiana-based company to be R2 certified, providing third-party audited environmental, health and safety stewardship to an internationally recognized standard. The standard also ensures complete data destruction to alleviate all of the most common anxieties holding people back from discarding their outdated computers, cell phones and other devices.
