GMS girl runners win at Danville
For the third consecutive year, the Greencastle girls' cross country team won the Dave Landes Danville Invite. The girls' team won 34-27, while the boys fell to a strong Warriors squad.
Emma Wilson led the Tiger Cubs with a time of 11:52. Seelye Stoffregen followed with a time of 12:07, with Katie Haynes adding a time of 12:13. Sydney Lewis ran a time of 12:23, with Grace Smith posting a time of 13:04.
Gretchen Weliever ran a time of 13:54 and Abigail King posted a time of 16:27.
Head coach Ivonne Martinez said Danville gave her girls' team quite a fight. She also noted Weliever's time qualified her for the state meet.
"Winning by only three points is just a exhilarating as winning with a perfect score," Martinez said.
In the boys' race, Clayton Wilson paced the squad with a time of 11:04. Jacob Crawley ran an 11:34, with Jackson Kendall and Jace Featherston running identical times of 12:15.
Tylan Jones ran a time of 12:33, while Harrison McCarty ran a 12:34 and Justin Berish ran a 13:02.
Martinez said many members of the boys' team posted personal best times and praised their efforts in spite of the loss.
"They rose to the occasion and filled in for some of their injured teammates," she said.
The season is coming to a close and the GMS squad has one final meet, its own Tiger Cub Invite Saturday, to qualify for the state tournament.
