DePauw to begin new bike program Saturday

Friday, September 28, 2012

On Saturday, Sept. 29 DePauw University will be hosting a Community Bike Event starting at 10 a.m., where it will be rolling out 20 new bikes for the community's use.

For the past year several students from the DePauw Management Fellows capstone class have been working to develop a community bike program in hopes to enhance the relationship between the DePauw and Greencastle communities.

While this program has been developed by the Management Fellows, the Office for Sustainability will assume the responsibility of making sure the program is running well, and maintaining the quality condition of the bikes.

Bikes will be available for check out free of charge for up to 24 hours at the registration desk at the Inn at DePauw or at the desk at the Public Safety Office in the Memorial Student Union Building.

Although there is no charge to check out a bike, an individual must first sign up for the program at the Inn at DePauw before he or she is allowed to use a bike.

It will be during this bike event Saturday that the community is invited to use the bikes for two hours, one from 10-11:30 a.m. and noon-1:30 p.m. Bikes will be rode around the community, primarily the square and around the DePauw campus.

Riders in the first group should arrive at the lobby of the Inn at DePauw at 9:45 a.m. while riders in the second group should arrive at 11:45 a.m.

For this event, participants are asked to confine their ride to the campus and the town.

Those supporting the purchase of the bikes are People Pathways, DePauw University, DePauw University Student Government and Covered Bridge Cyclery.

Those supporting ongoing maintenance of the bikes are Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant, Chief's Restaurant, Dairy Castle and Park Firebaugh, DDS.
