BRAZIL -- The Brazil Police Department has added a new officer with a name familiar to Putnam County residents.

Patrolman Brian Helmer, 29, originally from Putnam County, was sworn in Tuesday morning as the department's newest officer. Brazil Mayor Brian Wyndham conducted the ceremony.

Helmer has been working with the department for a few months now and will have to attend the Indiana State Police Academy in the upcoming months.

Helmer and his wife Lacey have two children and have made their home in Clay County.

According to Brazil Police Chief Clint McQueen, the department now has 13 full-time officers and is now fully staffed in addition to its reserve force.

Helmer's father, Tom Helmer, is the chief deputy for the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. His brother, Chris Helmer, is also a member of the Speedway Police Department.

  • UMad, typical Putnam County mentality at it's best. I think it's a great article and thankfully these individuals chose law enforcement instead of going in the other direction. You should be proud of fellow Putnam County residents making great strides, especialy all of them in one family. You all three look great and I wish I knew you personally!!!!

  • On this Thanksgiving Day, this is one more thing to be thankful for. Thank you, Helmer family and all who serve our communities.
