Cloverdale wrestlers shut out by Southmont in final home dual

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale wrestling team hosted the much larger Southmont on Tuesday. Cloverdale fought hard but ended the night losing 80-0.

This was Cloverdale's last home dual of the year and although they didn't win, there were a lot of hard fought matches.

Coach Steven Livingston wasn't very happy about his team loss, but wouldn't make excuses.

"Hey, you prepare, but one of these day you will run into someone who is just a little bit better and more prepared," Livingston said to his wrestlers after the meet. "What you need to do when that happens is learn from it, go back to the practice room and get ready. Get ready to correct your mistakes."

Cloverdale gave up seven forfeits to Southmont, which made a victory nearly impossible against the Mounties.

The speech was to help the Clovers stay positive, and encourage them to get ready for sectionals.

Cloverdale's wrestlers will have to beat guys like Southmont has to make it to regionals, and tough meets late and the year will help get them ready.

There were a few chances, even CHS's top wrestlers couldn't get it done.

In the 126-pound match, Cloverdale sophomore Jake Waycott lost his match 9-0 to Southmont's Chandler Moore.

Waycott, the winner of the West Central Conference meet on Saturday, allowed Moore two takedowns, one reversal and a three-point near fall.

Junior Wade Warren had a tough match of his own in the 152-pound match against Landon Nare.

Warren picked up Nare and earned a very physical takedown, resulting in Nare receiving medical attention. But after a few minutes, Nare returned to the match and won by a technical fall.

Clovers are off for two weeks and Livingston said that his team will be working hard to prepare itself for sectionals at Avon on Saturday, Jan. 26.
