GHS boys' JV wins WCC title

Saturday, February 2, 2013

Riding the strong performance of junior Luke Brotherton, the Greencastle boys' junior varsity basketball team defeated Monrovia 50-39 Thursday at McAnally Center.

With the win, the young Tiger Cubs finished the West Central Conference schedule with a perfect 5-0 mark, winning the conference for the second consecutive year.

Getting out to a quick lead, Greencastle never trailed in the contest and all 10 players saw action. Leading 26-17 at the half, Greencastle utilized a swarming half-court trap and forced several Bulldog miscues that led to easy transition baskets and the lead soon ballooned to 18 points.

Substituting freely, GHS coach Doug Hudson had several different combinations on the floor while resting almost all of his starters in the fourth quarter.

"Once again our defense was the difference," Hudson said. "For the third consecutive game, I thought our defense was pretty good in the first half but not outstanding. Many times we are pressing, but not pressuring. I challenged them at half to pick up the defensive intensity and they did just that.

"It is nice to sit starters in the fourth quarter and give the other players some quality minutes. From a coaching perspective, it is many times the substitutes that make the starters better by challenging them every day in practice. They deserve quality playing time.

"Juniors Luke Brotherton and Jonathon Newgent continue to excel both as players and leaders. Sophomores Calvin Hughes, Colyn Foxx and Carl Basile give us the defensive mentality and quality shooters. Our freshmen are starting to understand what it takes to be successful. If we continue to gel, we will be very difficult to beat the remainder of the season. As a coach, that is refreshing."

Brotherton led all scores with 23 points in just two quarters of action and Carl Basile added 8.

John Williams and Evan Burgess led Monrovia with 12 markers each.

Greencastle (8-5, 5-0 WCC) travels to Brown County Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest and then travels to North Putnam next Saturday for the Putnam County Tournament.
