James A. Martindale

James A. Martindale, age 91, of Muncie, formerly of Cambridge City, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at West Minster Village.

Born Sept. 28, 1921 in Richmond to Voyle and Margaretta Horner Martindale, he was a resident of Cambridge City from 1921 to 1945 and also Greencastle from 1962 to 2008.

James served in the U.S. Navy from May 23, 1945 to July 21, 1946.

He received a bachelor's degree from Wabash College, was a special student at Earlham College, received a master's degree in history and Masters of Library Science (MLS) from the University of Michigan.

James was the instructor of the History Department at Earlham College, Agricultural Experiment Station librarian at Purdue University, and periodical service librarian at Ball State University.

He also was instructor at Divisional III Phoenix Memorial Library at the University of Michigan, Undergraduate Librarian IV at University of Michigan, and Director of Libraries for 21 years at DePauw University, retiring in 1983.

Survivors include his daughter, Lynn (William) Sullivan of Greencastle; sons, James Martindale of Muncie and John (Susan) Martindale of Royse City, Texas; and grandchildren Sarah, Christopher, Joy and Grace.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Hueter Martindale, and his parents.

A private graveside service for James A. Martindale will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are being handled by Doan and Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
