Rotary club invites high school speech contest participants

The Rotary Club of Greencastle is seeking high school students to take part in its annual speech contest.

The contest is set for noon on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Inn at DePauw, the time and place of the club's weekly meetings.

Entrants need to pre-register for the contest by Friday, March 8.

This year's topic selection is open but must concern in part or whole some aspect of local, national or international Rotary project, program, motto or principle.

The speech may center on such things as "The Object of Rotary," "The 40-Way Test," "Peace Through Service" or other aspects of Rotary such as polio eradication, youth exchange or clean water.

Speeches should be five to seven minutes long and should be memorized, although note cards will be allowed at the club event.

The top three participants in the contest will be awarded $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third.

Additionally, the top two speeches at the club level will participate in the Rotary District 6560 Speech Contest, slated for Saturday, Aprtil 20 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Indianapolis.

Speeches at the district level must be memorized.

Winners at the district level will receive $1,000 for first place, $600 for second and $25 for third.

The event is open to all Putnam County High School students (including private school and home-schooled students).
