DePauw women to host opening weekend NCAA tournament action

Guard Kate Walker is one of three seniors hoping to lead DePauw on a deep tournament run. The undefeated Tigers host the La Roche University Redhawks in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday at Neal Fieldhouse.

The NCAA selection committee rewarded the DePauw University women's basketball team for its undefeated regular season with the opportunity to host two rounds of the NCAA tournament this weekend.

Fresh off their North Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship, the top-ranked Tigers will enjoy the confines of Neal Fieldhouse in a Friday match-up with La Roche College. The game will tip off at approximately 7 p.m.

DePauw (28-0) is making its 10th straight tournament appearance, following a 63-46 win over Kenyon in the NCAC championship game.

The Tigers have won the NCAC regular-season and tournament crown in each of their first two years in the conference.

La Roche (24-2) comes into the game on a 12-game winning streak, including a 63-58 win over Penn State-Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship,

In game one at Neal Fieldhouse, at-large selections Maryville College and Otterbein University will do battle at 5 p.m.

Maryville (23-4) bowed out of the USA South Conference tournament with a 61-51 semifinal loss to Christopher Newport University.

Otterbein (21-6) is making its first tournament appearance following a 73-46 loss to Ohio Northern in the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals.

The winners of the two Friday games will play at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for senior citizens, students and children and will go on sale at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cash sales only.

Neal Fieldhouse is located in the Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center. Entry may be gained through the north doors and parking is available in the Peeler Center lot.
