Area 30 students continue to shine

The Area 30 Career Center held its monthly meeting with the board of directors on Tuesday morning, in which the board went over several routine issues.

Area 30 recently completed its Civil Audit. Executive Director Lora Busch said the outcome was good, but there were several things that needed to be addressed, including more accessible water fountains and putting up signs with braile.

"We felt pretty good about everything," said Busch. "Because of the remodeling done in the building in the '90s there was no braille signage up."

The board also approved the Health Occupations Students of America to travel to Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis, which approximately 26 students and three instructors will attend April 15-17.

Also, the Skills USA students received approval to travel to Indianapolis April 19-20 for a competition. A total of 24 students and five instructors will attend.

As done yearly, lunch prices will see a raise of 10 percent in the 2013-14 school year.

The prices, which are currently at $2.25 will raise to $2.35 next year due to new guidelines.

Busch also gained approval to apply for a Region 7 grant, which if awarded, would allow two robotics advisors to run a one-week camp to get students interested in the program.

In the camp students would build a robot and have an in-house competition. The total for the grant is $17,589.

Four lucky Area 30 Law Enforcement students had the chance to complete drug dog training over the weekend. The students, Jim Shaw, Kelby Korby, Tommy Suddarth and Jacob Camacho were able to train with an experienced German Sepherd and even had time to play with a soon-to-be drug dog, eight-week old bloodhound named Allie.

Several students from the Law Enforcement program, instructed by Sgt. Charles Inman of the Greencastle Police Department, participated in drug dog training with the local-based American Maintrailing Police & Work Dog Association on Saturday, March 9.

Students who participated are Jim Shaw and Jacob Camacho of South Putnam High School, Tommy Suddarth of North Putnam High School and Kelby Korby of Eminence High School.

The students were also chosen to be used as apprentice trainer assistants at the American Maintrailing Police & Work Dog Association's National Seminar in Cloverdale, which takes place April 28-May 3. Following the seminar, they will receive a certificate of completion of 40 hours of training.

Also receiving praise in the meeting were the Area 30 Culinary Arts students, instructed by Mary Anne Birt, who recently participated in the state FCCLA/ProStart Invitational.

Among the winners were Tyler Piersal and Kodio Burchett, who took first for Career Display.

The culinary team of Bre Donner, Lorane Collier, Tyler White, Ron Palmer and Thomas Gross earned first place in Menu Development and Culinary Math.

Two teams also received high honors, bronze medals, in their culinary one-hour competition. The competition included a three-course meal and was judged on sanitation, teamwork, communication, plate presentation and tasting.

Teams included Corbin Schick, Hayley Simpson, Tyler Harris, Zane Wood and Mikayla Guyer as team manager. The second team consisted of Bre Donner as team manager, Lorane Collier, Tyler White, Ron Palmer and Thomas Gross.

The next Area 30 Board meeting will take place on April 9 at 9 a.m.
