'Great Hospital Adventure' effort scheduled for March 28 at PCH

Friday, March 22, 2013

West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (WCI-AHEC) is inviting all kindergarten through third-grade students in the area to take part in a fun program during spring break.

The Great Hospital Adventure will take place at Putnam County Hospital (PCH) on Thursday, March 28, and there is still time to register children for the free program.

Registration deadline is Tuesday, March 26. To register a child, persons should call Janet Rose at 812-237-4365, or email a reservation to Janet.Rose@indstate.edu.

Registration is limited to the first 20 applicants.

The program begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 2 p.m. Parents need to accompany their child to the event room (PCH classrooms, located on the third floor) to meet the PCH team and then return to pick up their child at 2 p.m.

All students will be signed in and out as an added precaution for their safety.

"The Great Hospital Adventure" is a 15-minute video about two puppets, Josh and Ashley. They tell about all the health career professionals they met when Josh had an accident and had to go the hospital.

After the video, students have the opportunity to use real puppets to discuss the health career workers in the video. Everyone will get an activity book to take home that retells the story. The group will also discuss the importance of when to call 9-1-1.

Other highlights of the day include a tour of the hospital, learning to use stethoscopes, discussing healthy habits such as wearing bike helmets, and games that teach about health careers.

Lunch will be provided by Putnam County Hospital, as well as a hands-on snack that will be instructed by the PCH Dietary Department. All activities, lunch and materials are free.

"The fun, educational day will hopefully spark a passion in your child to become a health care professional and return to Putnam County to practice," PCH officials said.
