CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale boys' and girls' track and field teams each came to race on Tuesday. The host Clovers beat North Putnam and Eminence in both classes.

The CHS boys finished first with 80 points, followed by Eminence's 39 and North Putnam's 36.

In the girls' meet, the Clovers scored 80, followed by the Cougars with 38 and the Eels with 16.

"We had a good showing," Cloverdale boys' coach Andy Tyler said. "It wasn't easy running in the conditions we were given and we still had some impressive times for the first meet of the year."

Junior Wade Warren picked up a win in the 110 hurdles, finishing at 16.2 seconds, junior Bret Brumfield won the 400-yard dash in 54.1 seconds and sophomore Jake Waycott won the 800-yard run in 2:18.

"We still have some holes to fill and I am confident our kids will step up and work hard to take care of those issues," Tyler said. "I was very impressed with the Eminence squad. Coach Waycott is running a solid program."

For the Cougars, boys' coach Tony Gray said he is starting to see his squad develop.

"We didn't get a team win tonight, but I saw some things to be excited about," he said. "I'm proud of the way the team has come together. The boys are gaining a cohesiveness and are starting to understand how a team is more powerful than a collection of individuals."

Picking up wins for the Cougars were senior Nick Kaufman in the long jump (18' 4"), Tucker Lowe in the 200-meter dash (24.6 seconds) and senior Eric Davis in the shot put (43' 9 1/4").

In the girls' meet Cloverdale picked up wins in nearly every event.

The sweep was broken up by North Putnam's Sam Lucas, a regional qualifier last season who won the shot put on Tuesday with a throw of 36' 2 1/2".

The Cougars went 1-2-3 in the event.

Seniors Paige Gruener, Claudia Monnett and Amillia Nally all got wins in two events, as did sophomore Bailee Stevens.

Gruener won 100-meter hurdles and 100-yard dash, Nally the 1600 and high jump, Monnett the 800 and 3200 and Stevens the long jump and 300 hurdles.
