Eagles open season with split of four-team meet
South Putnam's boys' and girls' track teams kicked off the 2013 season with a four-way opening meet against Northview, Owen Valley and Clay City Thursday night.
The boys' squad picked up seven event wins en route to winning the meet over second-place Owen Valley 88.5-72 while the girls' squad also claimed seven events but finished second to Northview, 73-63.
SPHS senior Hunter Barr picked up a pair of wins in the 400- and 800-meter races, senior Berndt Freeman won the 1600-meter run and senior Trent Workman tied for first in the pole vault.
Wes Riner won the 100-meter dash and Ryan Chestnut took first in the shot put. South Putnam's 400-meter relay team also claimed first on the evening.
Ariel Higgins scored three victories for the girls, winning the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, as well as the 200-meter dash. Senior Leanna Masters claimed the shot put and discus events, Kim Cheatham won the high jump and Maddie Egold won the 3200-meter run.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday at Cascade.
