Pond field day is coming soon

Monday, April 8, 2013

Soon ponds will be teeming with spring peepers and tadpoles. Some people are looking forward to fishing their ponds and watching the wildlife come and go.

Ponds can be a wonderful addition to your country lifestyle.

It seems almost every person in Putnam County either has a pond or wants a pond on their property. What many people don't realize is that ponds do take work to maintain.

Some people have inherited problem ponds. Ponds can also go very wrong and be a total nightmare. A pond that is not properly taken care of can become a stinking, mucky, mosquito-infested mess.

Every pond owner should attend the pond workshop coming up on April 11 at Gene Clodfelter's residence in rural Roachdale. Just follow the signs and you can't go wrong finding his place.

One of the topics we are going to discuss is how Mr. Clodfelter keeps his pond environment healthy.

We are going to discuss the dos and don'ts of pond construction. A properly constructed pond can give you a lot of pleasure for many years. A poorly constructed pond can be a leaky, messy, eyesore and headache.

We will also be discussing fish kills. Fish kills can be a problem no matter what the size of your pond. We will be discussing what causes fish kills and what you can do to prevent fish kills.

During the workshop we will also be discussing the importance of aeration in your pond and how it can help the pond environment.

This is a great time to come out and learn about ponds. If you have questions or problems this is a great time to ask some experts about your pond.

This program is free to anyone, but we ask that you register.

The Pond Field Day will be on April 11 from 1-3 p.m. at Gene Clodfelter's Bugle Valley Elk Farm, 4205 W. County Road 1000 North, Roachdale.

If you have questions or want to register contact Purdue extension at 653-8411 or email adelchambre@purdue.edu.
