Greencastle golfers open season with third-place tournament finish

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Greencastle boys' golf team finished in third place at Saturday's Northview Invitational.

The Tiger Cubs were led by Alec Davis' 73 and Luke Brotherton's 74.

Wataru Otaki shot 83, Tanner Dean 86 and Jake Buis 87.

"Very windy conditions made keeping the ball in play difficult," GHS coach Steve Paquin said. "Our ball striking, chipping and putting needs to improve from all our players."

Greencastle's combined score of 316 left it behind Linton-Stockton's 309 and Terre Haute North's 310.

GHS tied Terre Haute South, but Buis' score was enough to secure the win.

Cloverdale finished in 10th place at the 12-team event.

"Our front nine Saturday was very good, but we struggled with the wind on the back nine," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "One of the early bright spots was Kylar Galloway's effort in his first high school match. ... We have to learn on the fly and make adjustments as we go along."

"(We had) excellend scoring from Alex and Luke," Paquin said. "I'm satisfied with our scores for the first match of the year, but we need to lower our scores from our other three players and I'm sure that will happen as the season progresses."

Greencastle hosts West Vigo on Thursday at Windy Hill at 4:30 p.m.

Linton's Cole Bradbury had the low score for the day, shooting a 71.
