Tiger Cubs softball team falls to Terre Haute South 12-2

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs didn't take care of the little things Monday night and Terre Haute South used the extra chances to earn a 12-2 victory in high school softball action.

Greencastle, coming off a 10-run win over Eminence, never led. TH South's leadoff hitter Hollie Jones reached base on a two-strike single and, one out later, Mackenzie McGregor belted a two-run home run.

"We talked Saturday about doing the little things and tonight we didn't do the little things that we did Saturday," Greencastle coach Dave Keller said.

The Tiger Cubs did not hit the ball against TH South's Hanna Gossman. Greencastle managed just five hits, three by Kenlee Johnson (two singles and a double) and one each from Courtney Adams and Makenzie Myers.

Greencastle played TH South close through four innings. The Braves led 3-1 after three innings, but scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth and broke things open with a four-run seventh.

"We just came out a little bit slugglish tonight and there were some things that we didn't do that you need to do to win ball games," Keller said. "Whether (it's) a walk in a critical situation or a ground ball that doesn't get fielded and we get the third out of the inning and the next girl hits one. Its little things like that that you have to do. You can't give teams [extra] at bats and we did tonight and that's what hurt us."

The Tiger Cubs scored in the bottom of the first to cut the Braves' lead to 2-1.

Johnson rapped a two-out single and scored on back-to-back hit by Adams and Myers. But the Tiger Cubs left two runners on base. South's Gossman retired eight straight Tiger Cubs before Myers reached base on an error in the fourth.

Greencastle scored once in the sixth, but missed a big opportunity. Johnson ripped a one-out double to start the Tiger Cubs' rally. Adams reached base on an error and Johnson scored on a South throwing error. But again, the Tiger Cubs stranded a base runner.

Greencastle's third run came in the seventh when Danielle Thomas was hit by a pitch with two out. Ellen Gobert received a walk and Johnson followed with an infield hit to load the bases. Adams reached base on an error that scored Thomas and left bases loaded. That is where the game ended.
