Bainbridge Elementary School teacher Pat Schreiber accepts the March Teacher of the Month award from Banner Graphic General Manager Daryl Taylor recently.

BAINBRIDGE -- A reputation for going the extra mile and putting others' needs first has earned a Bainbridge Elementary School teacher the March Teacher of the Month distinction.

Pat Schreiber, a special education teacher at North Putnam Schools for the last nine years, was presented with the award by Banner Graphic General Manager Daryl Taylor recently.

Schreiber, who had learned of the honor earlier in the week was surprised to learn of the award and was quick to credit others for the success.

"I was stunned but pleased," Schreiber said. "It's thanks to all the people I work with. It's a team effort."

According to those who know this team player, Schreiber also does plenty of work on her own, ensuring a good learning environment for the students.

"Mrs. Schreiber is one of those teachers who puts her whole heart and soul into her students' lives," Schreiber's daughter Marta Clark wrote in her nomination. "She attained her teaching degree later in life at the age of 55, after choosing to stay home to raise her five children.

"She continued to further her teaching knowledge and creativity by obtaining her master's and taking many non-required classes and certifications," Clark continued. "She currently teaches special needs children and often 'brings home the job' with her concerns/worries over her students. She is an inspiration to those blessed to be under her guidance."

Schreiber was especially touched to learn it was her daughter who nominated her.

"It touched my heart because she's my darling," Schreiber said.

Clark isn't the only one praising Schreiber's extra effort.

"Pat is an awesome person," one commenter wrote of her nomination. "She is always upbeat and doing things for others."

"She works major overtime to make sure her kids are taken care of," another wrote. "She is the most dedicated special needs teacher I have ever known. She spends her own paycheck to improve her classroom."

Those classroom funds will be augmented this month by a $50 gift card that Schreiber has not yet decided how to utilize.

"I'm just going to take it and buy something nice for my class," Schreiber said. "I don't know what that is."

There is still a chance to honor a Putnam County teacher for the month of April. The Banner Graphic will be taking nomination for Teacher of the Month through Saturday, April 20. Voting will then take place April 25-30.

All teachers of the Month will be eligible for the Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by First National Bank and the Putnam County Community Foundation. The winning educator will receive a $500 cash prize from
