MONROVIA -- The South Putnam softball team won both games of a double-header on Monday, sweeping West Central Conference opponent Monrovia on the road.

The Eagles (7-3, 4-2 WCC) got wins from both sophomore Ashlee Gibson and senior Mattie Varvel and moved to third-place in the WCC.

Gibson threw in game one, going for a complete game in the 3-1 win. Junior Kenzie Trisler had a home run and the game-winning RBI.

The Eagles fell behind 1-0 after the first inning but Trisler's homer in the fourth gave them a 2-1 lead that held up.

Junior Brooke Cundiff's RBI double in the fifth added an insurance run.

Jenna Jones doubled and Gibson, senior Nikki York and freshman Katie Hewitt each had hits for SPHS in game one.

The Eagles served as the home team in game two, an 8-7, come-from-behind win in eight innings.

Varvel pitched a complete game, striking out one, and hit an important RBI triple at the plate.

Hewitt was four-for-four at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, including the walk-off, game-winning drive in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Gibson, Trisler, Cundiff, Jones and Crafton each had two hits for the Eagles. Senior Kelsey Whitaker went one-for-four with two runs scored and York had two RBIs.

The double-header was added on Monday afternoon in anticipation of Tuesday's rain.

The Eagles play again on Saturday at the Trojan Classic at Center Grove. SPHS faces Greenwood at 9 a.m.
