Sheriff's Department
A head-on collision occurred Monday afternoon at Brick Chapel when a driver attempted to make a left turn across oncoming traffic.
At 4:54 p.m., John P. Secrest, 36, Sioux Falls, S.D., was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2005 Kia Optima, waiting to turn left onto westbound County Road 350 North.
Secrest told Deputy Matt Biggs he saw a tractor-trailer hauling logs coming up behind him and he was afraid of being rear-ended.
While attempting to turn, Secrest collided head-on with a 2006 Jeep Liberty driven southbound by Ronald P. Buchanan, 49, Greencastle. Buchanan said when Secrest turned, the collision was unavoidable.
Buchanan had a female and a small child as his passengers, and all three were transported to Putnam County Hospital with complaints of pain and visible bruises.
Secrest signed a statement of release and was not treated for any injuries.
Biggs also learned that Secrest did not have insurance, as he recently moved and the insurance lapsed. He was cited for operating without proof of financial responsibility.
Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.
